As I sit up in this room, watching the fading evening light
I think of all the times we've spoken
All the few times we've met
And the ways tears have been shed
Those momentary hugs and the times when we had only three words for each other
Like father to son
Like mother to daughter
Like friend to dear friend
But this time
Lover to lover

It's pitch black outside
And I'm rocking uncontrollably
The quaking is not just from the rails
But in my heart, it's true
As time has passed
Things have changed
To the point where naught I know
Of when adventures start
And adventures end
And arrivals come to be born
Sitting in a chair
Drinking powder made of salt and sugar
Drowned in water, drowned in tears
I'm gasping as I try to learn
As times pass and things change
And the world is not the same as it was

And they matured and grew
They reached puberty, university
And from the home they flew
There were tears from us
Then shrugs and sighs
We talked together and
Philosophised the wise
For what had been two
Had been blessed, ensured
And became seven
In a way that endured
But now again we were us
We were just two
The children aged, left
Leaving just me and you
Me and you alone my dear
Until the darkness to one
It took you in my sleep my dear
And now I'm all alone

To be she who he always was
